Lost Your Purchase Bill in India? What to Do About a Warranty Claim

If you lost a product’s purchase bill, first try to recover the invoice from the retailer or seller. Then ask the manufacturer or authorised service centre what proof it accepts for your exact model; warranty rules vary by brand and product.

General information only; warranty coverage and accepted proof depend on the current seller and manufacturer terms.

Can you claim a warranty without the original bill?

Sometimes a brand can verify coverage from product registration or a serial number, while another claim may require purchase proof. There is no universal rule. LG India’s terms ask for proof of purchase with the matching model or serial number. ASUS India asks customers to retain proof and provide it when requested. Check the current terms for your product before relying on an alternative document.

1. Search for a digital copy

Check the retailer app or website under Orders or Purchase History. Search your email and SMS messages for the seller, item name, “invoice,” or “order.” If a family member placed the order, ask them to check their account. Download the invoice PDF and save a separate copy.

2. Ask the seller for a duplicate

Contact the shop or online seller and ask whether it can retrieve the sale or issue a duplicate invoice. Share the approximate purchase date, product and model, name or phone number used at purchase, and an order or payment reference if available. A digital payment record may help staff find the transaction; it is not necessarily a replacement for the product invoice.

3. Confirm what the manufacturer accepts

Contact the manufacturer or authorised service centre with the product model and serial number. Ask whether it can verify the warranty and which documents it needs before you visit or ship the product. Keep the response and any case number. If the invoice does not show a detail the service centre needs, ask the seller and manufacturer how to resolve that gap.

4. Keep supporting records together

Collect the warranty card or registration email, order confirmation, delivery message, invoice copy, and payment record. These can help establish the purchase trail, but the manufacturer decides what satisfies its warranty terms. Do not alter a receipt or create a substitute invoice.

5. If the claim is refused

Ask the service provider for the reason and the warranty term it applied. Raise the issue with the seller or brand customer-care team in writing. If you still have an unresolved consumer grievance, the Government of India’s National Consumer Helpline lists current contact options.

Does a bank or UPI statement replace a purchase bill?

Usually, a payment record shows that money moved but may not identify the product, model, seller terms, or purchase date required for a warranty check. Use it to help the retailer trace the sale and ask the manufacturer whether it accepts any alternative proof.

Quick checklist

  • Search order history, email, and SMS for a digital invoice.
  • Ask the original seller whether it can retrieve the transaction and provide a duplicate.
  • Check the exact brand and model requirements before visiting a service centre.
  • Treat payment records as supporting information unless the manufacturer confirms otherwise.

Quick answers

Can I claim a warranty without a bill in India?

It depends on the product and manufacturer policy. Some brands can verify coverage another way, while others require purchase proof. Ask the manufacturer or authorised service centre for the current requirement.

Can a service centre check warranty by serial number?

Some can look up product or registration details, but a serial number is not accepted as proof in every case. Confirm what the service centre needs for your model.

What should I do first after losing a warranty bill?

Check the retailer account and email for an invoice copy. If it is not there, contact the original seller and request a duplicate, then confirm the brand’s claim requirements.
